From Brenner Pass to Verona, a very nice and easy multi-day bike journey, that we highly recommend: spectacular landscapes, excellent hospitality and a perfect cycle path. Also suitable for families!
DAY 1 BRENNERO/MULES: 34 km/165M D+
By car to Verona in the late morning, then from there we took a regional train to Brenner Pass (3.02h – cost € 21.75 plus € 3.50 bicycle supplement each), from where we started riding. The bike path is amazing and runs downhill alongside the old railway tracks to VIpiteno, through rolling hills and cool woods. The views are gorgeous and the signposting is great. We stayed overnight at Hotel Stafler and had a very good dinner in their Gasthofstube. They also have another restaurant that has 2 Micheliln stars, if you want to spoil yourself …
DAY 2 MULES/BOLZANO: 67km/210M D+
The route is beautiful and varied. You follow the Isarco river mainly downhill, even if there are some short climbs. Along the way there are many interesting places for a stop: the Fort of Fortezza, the Abbey of Novacella – famous for its wines, where you can also have lunch, the town of Chiusa and its massive convent of Sabiona. Don’t miss Bolzano with the nice arcades and Piazza Walther. We stayed overnight in the very central and bikefriendly Stadt Hotel Città.
DAY 3 BOLZANO/ROVERETO: 95km /120M D+
The descent is over, now we are at the bottom of the valley and follow Adige River. We ride through orchards and vineyards of Gewurztraminer, in the area of Lake Caldaro, and of Teroldego in the Rotaliana plain. Impossible not to stop in Trento, which welcomes us with its painted houses, the Cathedral and the Neptune fountain. The Adige cycle path then continues south to Rovereto: an absolute must is a visit to the MART-Museum of modern and contemporary art. For dinner we recommend the Osteria del Pettirosso or the Novecento Restaurant of the Rovereto Hotel, where we stayed overnight.
DAY 4 ROVERETO/VERONA 89KM/370M D+
From Rovereto you keep riding south, along Adige River, through vineyards of Marzemino, to Avio: don’t miss the beautiful castle of Sabbionara. The route is always flat, just the ascent to the Rivoli Fort is a bit more demanding, but offers a beautiful viewpoint over the Adige Valley. Once in Rivoli Veronese continue along the Rivoli-Bussolengo cycle path – part of the cycle route of the Venetian rivers – and follow the Biffi canal. Then, you’ll be back along Adige and finally in beautiful Verona.
